Holiday wore white gardenias in h^ hair. • 16,1973, Leila Smith Foley became the first African- American female to be elected mayor of a U.S. city, Taft, Okla. • 27,1927, Coretta Scott King was bom in Marion, Ala. Brandy is back with a different sound Critic's & rner reviews & previews BY SHONTAE HARRELL Banner Reviewer and Reporter FuHMoon, Brandy’s long anticipated third album, hit st(»es March 5. It has been three years since the release of her second album 1998’s, Never Say Never. Brandy's new sound is different from that of her past reccsded teenybqq)er lyrics. On Full Moon she collabo rated in die studio with well- known inoducers and songwrito^ such as Babyfiace, Neptunes, Soul Shock & Karlin, Mike City, and Rodney J«kins. During a three-year hiatus Brandy was very busy with her personal life: she moved out on ha* own, spent some time soul searching and got married. Brandy and h» husband are expecting their first child, a girl, in July. She said she chose bo name hCT new album Full Moon because she has completed a complete circle, and she now feels whole. Most of the relationship centered lyrics incorporated in her music are a reflection of Brandy’s renewed life. Brandy tdd MTV News, “It is a ccmcept album, it’s autobiogr{q>hical. Everything that I’ve gone through in the last three years is reflected.” “What About Us” the first single released from Brandy’s third LP. In this particular song Brandy roars back at an untrue love. “Why don’t you return my calls?” she asks her would be Mr. Right Brandy also uses sassy yet sexy lyrics, which proves that she is not a little girl anymore. “I can’t take this bulls**L” Even hCT voice is deq)er than ever, adding an extra depth to chorus. Full Moon is very diffo’ent from her previous musical works. It’s ghetto, pop and R&B at the same time. This record has a lot of elements to it Anything can happen on a full moon. Mike City, Babyface, and Ruff RydCTS wrote Full Moon, die title track. Brandy perfcxms a duet with Ray J, her brother, on “I’d Die Without You,” a remake of PM Dawn’s 1993 hit On “It’s Not Worth It,” Brandy refuses to teeak up with h^Bf^yBoo. This track also includes Michael Jackson’s vocals to create a sample like noneotho’. On die track “I Thought,” Brandy cuts off a zero and gains independence, and she testifies about getting caught up in the rapture of love on “He Is.” This CD is not one of my favorites at this particular time, but I hope it will grow on me. Brandy is enjoying the experience of marriage and being pregnant while juggling a prominent career. In in her latest release she has proved herself more than capable of managing both her p^sonal life and career. I give Full Moon three bells.
