H. C. Club of Winston At the meeting of the Lucy Hanes Chatham Club held in the Club room at Centenary church Monday evening at seven o’clock, the following new officers were installed, using the impressive candle service; president, Mrs. Margaret Taylor; vice-president, Mrs. Addie Pope; secretary, Miss Madie Austin; assistant secretary. Miss Agnes McDaniel; treasurer. Miss Linda Pishel; chairman of the social service committee, Mrs. Nell Petree; chairman of the fi nance committee, Mrs. Crystal Bell, and chairman of the recrea tion committee. Miss Vera Austin. Following the installation ser vice a social hour was held hon oring Mrs. Mary Snyder. A num ber of unique contests were en joyed, following which a shower was given Mrs. Snyder. The party came to a close with the serving of all-day suckers. Announce ment has been made of the City Industrial Girls’ Rally to be held at the Y. W. C. A. February 9th. An invitation has been received from Mrs. Chatham inviting the club and their boy friends to a party to be held at the Country Club Saturday night, February 2. L. H. C. Club of Elkin The Lucy Hanes Chatham Club No. 2, closed its year 1934 with the Installation of officers at the Club House on Thursday evening, Jan. 31st. Following a very im pressive installation service, Miss Austin, club leader, told the story of “Hannah”. During the busi- nes.s se.ssion the following report was given. Since the club was organized April 1st this group of girls has done better thaia any of the other two clubs; No. on roll 20 Percentage present during the year 75% No. of flower baskets sent 12 No. of funeral designs G No. of visits to sick 50 Total paid out of Treas $17.80 Total amount raised $17.25 Total paid out $35.05 Total collected from April 1, 1934 to Feb. 1, 1935....$45.85 Cash on hand Feb. 1, 1935....$28.05 The above report was read by Mrs. Annie Swaim, retiring treas urer, and turned over to the new treasurer, Mrs. Gertrude Day. L. H. C. CLUB NO. 1 The L. H. C. Club No. 1 has been very busy with plans for the year 1935. We plan for this year to be the best in the history of our club. We want to be a great er success than ever before and by success we mean cooperation, accomplishments and noble deeds. We intend that the Club shall be outstanding and worthwhile. That it will be interesting and the name of our club will be known far and wide for its good efforts. We shall try in every way to show our appreciation to Mrs. Chatham for our lovely building which has just been com pleted. We are looking forward now to helping furnish it. At the meeting held at the club house Thursday evening, Janu ary 31st, the regular installation service was held following which a shower and miscellaneous pro gram was given in honor of Ver- lie Davis, one of the first mem bers of our club, who isn’t working here any more. Interesting poems were read by Mrs. Kathryn Bran non, and Miss Austin, following which a clever skit was given by Misses Davis, Darnell and Hanks. The party came to a close with the serving of a salad course. Mrs. Davis received many beau tiful and useful gifts, which showed her in a small way how much she has been missed from the club. Mrs. Davis was the first vice-president of L. H. C. Club. The new officers for 1935 acted as hostess. BOOK CLUB MEETS The R. B. L. Book Club met Wednesday night at the Club House with the president, Miss Mary Etta Laffoon acting as hostess. A short business meet ing was held at which time the books were selected for the club to buy and the programs were planned for the year. It was de cided to give the books to the Club Library as soon as the members had read them. The Club will Judy the American authors first. Following the business meeting a short social hour was held with i the girls toasting marshmallows ! around the huge fireplace. Fruits Newlyweds Mr, and Mrs. John E. Waller ®SOdETY. Miss Mathis Entertains In Honor of Her Sister Miss Lizzie Mathis entertained Saturday evening, January 19th, honoring her sister. Miss Ruby Mathis, of Winston-Salem, who was visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Mathis. Upon the ar rival of the guests they were in vited into the living room where games and contests were enjoyed. The party came to a close with the serving of delicious refresh ments. About thirty young peo ple were present. Mounce-Wall Miss Nellie Mounce, of Elkin Route 1, and Mr. Gaither Wall, of Elkin, were united in marriage Saturday evening, Jan. 19th, at 6; 30 o’clock at the home of the bridegroom’s sister, Mrs. E. H. Holbrook, of Elkin. Vows were spoken by Rev. Eli Jordon. Fol lowing the ceremony Mrs. Hol brook entertained at a delightful wedding supper. Guests included the bride and groom. Rev. and Mrs. Eli Jordon, E. H. Holbrook and children, and Miss Alice Wall. The bride is the eldest daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Mounce, and is an outstanding member of the younger set. The groom is the son of Mr. and were also enjoyed. The Club will meet the second and fourth Wed nesday nights. Any girl wishing to join will please see Mary Etta Laffoon. Mrs. H. H. Wall, and is highly esteemed by his acquaintances. At the present they will make their home with the bridegroom’s parents. Long-Waller Coming as a complete surprise to the many friends of the young couple is the announcement of the marriage of Miss Lola Long, of Tobaccoville, N. C., to Mr. John Edgar Waller, also of Tobacco ville. The wedding took place at Hillsville, Virginia, Nov. 24, 1934, with the Rev. B. F, Poff, Bap tist minister, officiating and us ing the beautiful ring ceremony. The bride wore for her nuptials a suit of navy blue with acces sories to match. Mrs. Waller is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Long, of To baccoville. She graduated from Old Richmond high school with the class of ’29, and is employed in the Cloth Department of the Winston Mill. The bride has many friends who will be inter ested in her happiness. The groom is the son of Mrs. Octavia Waller and the late J. H. Waller, of Tobaccoville, and is a prosperous young farmer of that vicinity. Mr, and Mrs. Waller are at home to their friends at their home near Tobaccoville, Briggs-Baugess Wedding Announced Announcement is made of the marriage of Miss Vera Briggs and Eugene Baugess, both of this city, which was quietly solemnized on Friday evening, January 25, 1935, at 8 o’clock at the home of Rev. A. R. Scott with the Rev, Scott officiating. The bride was attired in a trav eling suit of blue with accessories of a harmonizing shade. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C- C. Briggs, of Sanford, and re ceived her education at Copeland High School and Draughon’s Business College, Winston-Salem- Mr. Baugess is the son of Mr- and Mrs. N. Baugess, of North Wilkesboro, and holds a position with the Reynolds Tobacco Com pany. Immediately after the ceremony the couple left for a short wed ding trip and are now at home to their friends on the Rural Hall Road. Mrs. Baugess is employed in the Shipping department of the Winston mill.
