Snowbound
From childhood’s earliest days I
have liked snow, thrilled to see its
feathery flakes envelop the earth in
a soft, white blanket, but my recent
experience has made me consider the
elements with something other than
its beauty in mind.
It happened like this. At about

Our Part In Defense
The subject of national defense is
one we hear everyday. We are re
minded through our newspapers, ra
dios and various other ways that
each of us has a part to play in this
great national conflict. It seems that
some of us are confident that Amer
ica can’t be licked, so we sit back
and forget that our little support will
help. We see nothing but certain vic
tory ahead, and our main concern
seems to be how soon we can win ana
how few sacrifices we need to make
to accomplish the ask.
It isn’t easy to adjust ourselves to
this war torn world, but it is a fine
thing to be able to change one’s en
vironment for the better, to conquer
obstacles, to rise above trouble, to be
master of every situation, and to be
master of ourselves. If, however, we
cannot change our environment for
the better, we can adapt ourselves to
the present. If this world in which
we live is not what it should be, it is
our duty and privilege to do all in
our power to improve conditions.
There is nothing more glorious than
learning to do the hard things of life
when they have to be done.
There are a lot of things which
we can do without. We can undergo
inconveniences if necessi^ demands.
The near future may bring a short-
otfe of labor, and many of the luxu-

Income Tax Problem Is Now
Out Of The Way
Last week we paid our income tax
and find that we are paying much
more this year than ever before.
In making out our returns we real
ized that we must make some secure
investment that would, at the same
time do the most good. An invest
ment which pays 33 1-3 percent re
turn and which is as safe as any in
vestment can be, is the one for us.
This is exactly the kind of an invest
ment you can make by purchasing a
U. S. Defense Bond. You will receive
back the money invested plus 33 1-3
percent more.
Every employee at Ecusta, Cham
pagne, and Endless Belt should do his
share toward making the payroll al
lotment plan a success. Each one
should participate in the plan so that
he can feel that he is doing his bit
for our country in these critical times
and at the same time realize that he
is saving his money and earning 33 1-3
percent return on the investment.
Ecusta, since its beginning has had
the reputation as a leader in coopera
tive effort and now is trailing other
companies in the percentage of bonds
purchased.
The plan was put into effect in
order that it might be possible for
every employee to save his money for
the purchase of U. S. Defense Bonds,
to make it easy and convenient for
the employee to have an opportunity
to feel that he is helping our coun
try to remain free, to provide a means
of saving one’s money. The money
you have the company set aside each
pay day for the purchase of a bond
is invested—it is invested in a share
of our freedom—in our American way
of life, for which each of us is grate
ful.
When we stop to think what our
purchase of bonds is helping to do '
we will realize that we should be
determined to make the payroll al
lotment plan for the purchase of de
fense bonds a success here at Ecusta.
Sign up today for your bond and have
that glorious feeling that you are do
ing your part.
