Sunday, June 1, the lo cals travel to Beaver Lake to meet Enka. In three of the four matches in which he played during the match, George Sexton of the Electric Shop was low man for Ecusta. He had an 82 against Champion, a 77 against Beacon, and a 78 against Postal Accounts. '' Dropped Four Of Fiv& Con tests In May; Sams To Join Team GEORGE SEXTON Ace Golfer Tennis Team Meets Asheville Sunday On Sapphire Courts The Ecusta tennis team takes on its first opponent of th« season on Sunday, June 1, on the Camp Sap phire courts when Asheville pro vides the competition. The matches will begin at 1:30 p. m. Bob Anders of the Mill Office is captain of the netters and will be counted on to come through in the tough No. 1 spot. The remainder of the team will be selected from Charles Colwell, E. B. Garrett, Jr., Walter Straus, Bob Colwell, Sam Matthews, and Bill Long. Other clubs who have been con tacted for possible future matches Girl Softballers Open With Canton At Sapphire Sunday Our girls’ softball team will meet Canton Sunday at 2:30 o’clock at Camp Sapphite in the opening game of the season. The girls have been practicing for the past three weeks and should make a creditable showing in their first start of the year. The remainder of the games this sea son will probably be played on Wednesday nights as a preliminary to the Ecusta Smoky Mountain include the Biltmore Forest Coun try Club and the Greenville Coun try club. Feeling that the worst is behind them, our baseballers are hoping that Saturday’s game here with Martel at 3:30 p. m. will be a def inite turning point in the season. The men had a tough time of it in W.N.C. League competition this past month, winning only one of five starts. The most recent loss was to Enka last Saturday, 7-6. The victors raced in two in the ninth to triumph. Jack Alexander led the stickwork with three” hits. Shortstop David Sams will join the team next Saturday for . the Green River game and Gus Allen, peppery young catcher, gave a creditable showing in his first game last Saturday. In the opening game, Sayles licked us by 21-11 as Ecusta er- rored too often. Improvement was noted in the 7-4 loss to Hazelwood on May 3. The first win came at Champion, 11-8, as the men drilled out 16 hits. A heart-breaking loss to Bea con came May 17, 9-8 as a ninth inning rally fell short. Bowlers Capture WNC Championship By the margin of a single game, our bowlers captured championship honors in the W.N.C. Bowling League by scoring a thrilling 2-1 victory over Enka in the final match of the season. At the annual banquet of the league Tuesday night, May 13, in Asheville, the men were award ed a beautiful trophy for their season’s endeavors. Final individual averages for the season were:, Galloway, 174; Morris, 173; Rogers, 173; Straus, 170; Col well, 169; Lavell, 161. League games. The starting lineup has not been chosen, pending the final workouts Thursday and Friday of this week; however, it will be picked from the following girls: Miriam Poore, Mary Alice Jones, Florence Snyder, Faye Sentelle, Vemelle McCall, Lucille Orr, Millie O’Dell, Virginia Queen, Gladys Amette, Willie Prince, Dixie Whitaker, Evelyn Morrow and Charlotte Barnwell.
