SOFTBALL OUTFIT
IS IN TOURNAMENT
Fast Event Opens In Hen
dersonville Next Wednes.;
Entries From 2 States
With a season’s record of 28 wins
and 9 losses, the softball team en
ters the fast Hendersonville tour
nament next Wednesday night
against some of the strongest com
petition in North and South Caro
lina. Since many of our employ
ees live in Henderson county this
tournament will give them a good
opportunity to see our team in ac
tion.
The opponent for Ecusta in the
first round has not yet been an
nounced, but it’s certain to be a
tough one. Clubs entered from
Western North Carolina include
Enka, Ashevilli:. Elks, Waynesville,
Tryon, Hendersonville, Army
Store of AfeheVille, Canton, Oteen,
and many others. South Carolina
entries include Dunean Mills of
Greenville, Union, Foster Burns of
Spartanburg and Coca-Cola of
Greenville.
Prior to this tournament, the
softballers have a doubleheader
scheduled with Hazejwood in
Waynesville Saturday night. This
pair of important Smoky Moun
tain Leagjue contests should serve
as good conditioners for the Hen
dersonville tournament.

Still Going Strong
Our former Ecusta athletes are
continuing their sparkling per
formances they started the first
of the season.
Tom McCall recently won his
20th game of the season for
Mooresville, and thus became the
second pro pitcher in the
state to break the 20 mark this
season. He is also hitting a fancy
.302. Roy Whitaker’s 12-5 won and
lost record with Mobile makes him
a leading Southern League chunk
er. Gil Coan is batting .340 for
Chattanooga and is leading the
league in stolen bases with 38,
including several thefts of home.
Along the grapevine, they’re say
ing that Washington is now re
gretting sending him back to
Chattanooga—that some of the
oldsters have failed to come
through for the Senators.

more to the score than striking

Much Enthusiasm In
Model Airplane Club
A fast growing hobby, that of
building and flying gas model air
planes, has taken root here and
several employees of our com
panies and employees’ children are
members of the local model air
plane club.
The model planes and gas en
gines are far from being toys. The
models are replicas and scale mod
els of famous civil and military
planes. The engines are powerful
miniatures, some of them capable
of making 125 miles an hour. The
scope of the sport has reached tre
mendous proportions. Several
weeks ago 120,000 people attend
ed a show on Long Island, N. Y.,
while one at nearby Greenville, S.
C., drew a crowd of more than 10,-
000.
The local club has been using
the Ecusta baseball field for fly
ing its planes. It is hoped that a
field meeting all flying require
ments can be obtained in the fu
ture.
Members of the local club who
are employees of Ecusta or sons of
Ecusta employees are as follows:
William Fetzer, Gene Eggert, Ce
cil Smathers, Wayne Kerber,
Frank Kerber, Bruce Petit, Ed Ed
wards, Jack Edwards, Dobin Mc
Crary, Larry Dixon, Jr., Buzzy De-
Bord, Bobby Clark, Eric Neumann,
