PAGE SIX THE ECHO DECEMBER, — iLillltiYlU: In a few more days, we’ll be replacing those 1947 calendars with brand new 1948 ones .... and with that simple move, we will be moving forward into a new year. As fast as 1947 has whip ped by, it’s hard to realize just how much has happened here at Ecusta, but let’s glance at some of the highlights; Growth and expansion were the key words as our company moved forward in one of its greatest years. The new inspec tion building was completed. . . . work on the boiler room addition and turbine room moved along rapidly .... the insurance pro gram was broadened so that ad ditional life insurance could be had .... The Echo was publish ed for the first time on our own paper ..... and on and on we could go describing the many changes and improvements which took place. HONORS FOR MANY It was a year filled with hon ors for many Ecustans. Mr. Har ry H. Straus was signally hon ored by N. C. State college with an honorary doctorate of engi neering. Speaking of Mr. Straus, the year of 1947 will also be a year which will long be remem bered by him and Mrs. Straus .... they had an enjoyable and well-deserved vacation in France. Raymond F. Bennett was elect ed president of the Pulp and Paper Superintendents Associa tion, with Lee M. Bauer being selected chairman of the south eastern division of the same or ganization . . . Harvey Souther was elected president of the Five Year Club. Then there was the square dance team, named champs of the big festival in Asheville And the graduates — 20 of them— were in the news. Marriages, children, and homes were in the limelight. The Echo recorded marriages by the dozens, old Dr. Stork was busy as the proverbial bee, and lasting joy was brought to many couples as they moved into their own homes. FELLOWSHIP AND FOOD One cannot look back on 1947 without remembering the many occasions which brought us to gether for fellowship and food the stupendous Fourth of July picnic, the departmental picnics, Thanksgiving dinner, and similar events. The Home on the Range column in The Echo is proof that Ecusta housewives are skilled cooks. Visitors came by the dozens and went away probably some what dazed by the size and scope of our operations. From many states and foreign countries, they came, and the glowing compli ments which they paid to our plant and its personnel should be (Continue^ From Page Thirteen) HONOHS FOR MANY: Mr. Harry H. Straus was presented honorary degree by North Carolina State College, and other recognitions. Mr. Raymond F. Bennett was elected president of the Superintendent's Association of the Pulp and Paper industry. Mr. Lee Bauer was elected chairman of th Southeastern Division of the Superinten- dent’s Association.
