Personnel Dept. Will Help You With Income Tax Farms As in past years, the Person nel department is ready to as sist anyone desiring help with fiilng their Income Tax returns. The office is open from 8:45 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and it would be wise to file your return as early as possible to avoid the last minute rush. That March 15 deadline has a tricky way of slipping up on all of us. Both Federal and State returns are due on that date. With a recent pay check ev eryone was given a Withholding Certificate which listed their earnings and withholding tax paid during 1947. As most of you remember from last year and other years, this certificate can be used to file your Federal return. This form is much simpler and is cheaper providing your deduc tions do not exceed 10 per cent of your earnings. Just fill in the information requested on the back of the original and mail to the Collector of Internal Reve nue, Greensboro, N. C. Be sure to list each dependent. Keep your duplicate for possible fu ture reference. You should not send any money with this re turn as the Revenue department audits your return and later sends you a statement that you owe more tax, or send you a refund check representing over payment. If you feel your deductions (that is, contributions, taxes, in terest, medical expenses ex ceeding 5% of wages, etc.) amount to more than 10 per cent of your earnings, you will want to use the 1040 Form, common ly called "the long form.” If you desire help with it or with the Withholding Certificate, just bring a list of your deduc tions with you to the Personnel department. Perhaps you have already re ceived in the mail the returns on which your State Income Tax must be filed. Every married man who earned more than $2,- 000 in 1947 and every woman and single person who had an income of over $1,000 must file. Husband and wife may not file a joint return; all depend ents must be listed on the hus band’s return. A money order or check should accompany your state return, although your tax can be paid in quarterly install ments if you desire. The first payment, however, must ac company your return. Meet The Wife The Echo is predicting at this early date a future stage or screen career for little five year old Linda Rickman, shown at right with her mother, Mrs. Earl Rickman, Never have we had a more cooperative little subject for a picture, and we might add that it is evident she inherited much of her grace and charm from her mother. Right now, Mrs. Rickman and Linda are looking forward to moving in the nice attractive new home which Daddy has been "expediting.” The new house is nearing completion and is located on Hillcrest Avenue. Earl who is in the Machine Room has been with us since July 23, 1942, and consequently a Five Year Club member. 12
