Exciting Games On Cage Schedule Our classily-dressed basketball teams are having an interesting, if not entirely successful, sea son. Games thus far have for the most part been close and excit ing. The girls are faring some what better than the boys, but when you consider that the boys, have lost one game by one point, one by two points, and one by three points against the best industrial competition in this section, you must admit they’re far from being a push over for any team. Jean Whiteside Williams has sparked the girls’ offense while Mitch Taylor and Speedy Mer- rell have been among the scor ing leaders in the boys’ contest. Both clubs are well-balanced though, with every player play ing an important role. The boys’ squad consists of; Mitch Taylor, Pete Dockens, Speedy Merrel, Troy Drake, Conley McKinnish, T. C. Mc Call, Bob Merril, Claude Laugh ter, Harold Stamey, Garland Moffet, James Byrd and Willie Nelson. Members of the girls’ team are: Jean W. Williams, Florence Snyder, Wanda Nelson, Sarah Avery, Charlotte Barnwell, Mary Alice Jones, Argyle Wells, Dixie Whitaker, Alma Allman, Lu cille Gossett, Adlyn Ward and - ■' Whitak"- ^''~ords to date GIRLS Ecusta 14 .... Hendersonville 67 “Beat The Cards” Is Battle Cry "Beat the Cardinals” is still the "battle cry” among the other eleven teams in the Interdepart mental Bowling, but the Cham pagne pin-up boys are still four games ahead of their most both ersome rivals—Office A and Pulp Mill who are tied for sec ond place in matches through January 21. On down the line, the race is close, even for the cellar spot where Office B, the Dodgers, and Power are neck and neck. Maintenance A probably suf fered the biggest dip during the past month, dropping to seventh spot in the standings. Chris Rogers has the top set, 645. Others over 600 are Walt er Straus, 606; Clyde Galloway, 604; and Bruce Reynolds, 609. Clyde Galloway has the best average of the year—177. EVENT Seven teams from Ecusta are entered in the 12 th annual W. N. C. Bowling Tournament which began in Asheville Janu ary 24. The Ecusta W. N. C. team, Office A and B, Cardinals, Pulp Mill, Maintenance A and Control are entered in addition to many singles and doubles en tries. ECUSTA BOWLERS SHOW PECULIARITIES It’s interesting to watch the little characteristics of bowlers in the Interdepartmental League. For instance. . . . . . . the way Leland George of Power holds his left hand up near face as he approaches the foul line... how John Goldberg- er looks like he’s going down the alley with the ball, but never does. . . how Walter Straus mrns around and hitches up his pants after releasing the ball. . . the slow motion, many-stepped ap proach used by Olan Hall and Ernie Burch. . . the running start Bob Matthews gets. . . the slow, but accurate ball Margie Bevacque eases down the alley . . . the way Buck Albert winds up for his side-arm curve. . . the reverse body english George Cooper uses after he has released the ball . . . the hard balls which Chris Rogers and Jim Avery whiz down the alley. .. . the one- step approach used by Frank Is rael and Bob Collier. . . more next month.
