THE ODDS ARE AGAINST US IT HAS HAPPENED HERE Realizing that self-preserva- tion is responsible for our in terest in the prevention of per sonal injuries, there is something else that should incite each of us to guard against every type of accident that could possibly occur. Namely, those loved ones who we leave at home, and xvho are entirely dependent on us for their livelihood. The assurance of returning home each day free of infuries and knowing we have earned a full day’s xvages is well xuorth our best efforts in remaining "accident free.” For the person who looks for ward to living tiventy years longer, and most of us have high hopes of even surpassing that mark, the odds against us when taking unnecessary chances are entirely too great. To be very frank, the oddf are over ten million to one against us luhen we attempt to save one minute, and take chances that might easily result in the loss of life. We must admit that a great many of us in this day and time are prone to gamble occasional ly, but none of us would accept a bet with one chance in ten mil lion of being a winner. You ask why the odds are over ten million to one? . . The answer is that in 20 years there are 10,512,000 minutes, and many a life has been snuffed out in much less than one min ute. If we must gamble, why not place our bets on a sure thing? . . . Practice safety at all times and assure ourselves of less suf fering, higher wages, and a much longer life. It is hard to believe that em ployees will disregard safe prac tice rules and regulations that are entirely for their protection, and yet right here in our plant, this has occurred on numerous occasions.
