ON THE COVER
Every American readily recognizes our cover
picture this month as the famous Statue of Liberty.
No other American landmark so incorporates the
spirit of the approaching Fourth of July as does
this structure which stands on Bedloe’s Island in
the New York harbor.
The statue was a gift from the French people
to America, the cornerstone being laid August 5,
1884, and the statue unveiled October 28, 1886.
The monument weighs 450,000 pounds. Forty
persons can stand in the head and 12 in the
torch. The length of the right arm alone is 42
feet. (Photo by Ewing Galloway.)
