War Memorial Unveiled.... n a most impressive service, the beautiful War Memo rial to Ecusta’s sixteen veterans who lost their lives in World War II, was dedicated at Camp Sapphire, Sunday, May 30. Mr. Harry H. Straus made the speech of dedication. Opening his speech, he read President Truman’s Memorial Day proclamation. Mr. Straus’ talk was a moving, sincere tribute to the heroes and in the course of his speech, he emphasized that "we must win as decisive a peace as we won the war.” The speech appears on the opposite page. Many of the families of the men were present for the occasion, in spite of the rain which fell during most of the ceremony. An honor guard, composed of Ecusta vet erans, took part in the service and placed a wreath at the base of the monument for each of the sixteen men. Music by the Ecusta band opened the program and Rev. B. W. Thomason offered the opening prayer. Beverly Bryant recited Sir Walter Scott’s Memorial Day poem, "Soldier, Rest! Thy Warfare O’er.” Molly McCall and Judith Mann unveiled the monument. As the national anthem was played, the flag was raised. The closing prayer was led by Rev. W. G. McFarland. E. B. Garrett, Jr., di rector of personnel, presided. 6
