Everybody has a good time at a singing convention! The
audience and the singers alike maintain a high spirit and
often the scheduled program runs into overtime as the
audience calls for more music and the singers flattered by
such recognition, respond obligingly.
Transylvania County is a center of interest in the sing
ing convention world and since many Ecustans are
among the patrons of the convention and still others take
part in the singing, The Echo visited several of the "sing
ings” lately to gather material for this feature.
This fact is clear everywhere you go—-every convention
has a tremendous following. Seats and parking space are
at a premium and veteran convention goers know to be
there early or spend the entire time standing up.
Grandaddy of all conventions in this area is the Fifth
Sunday event held in the county courthouse. Coming every
three months, the big affair packs ’em in the courtroom and
the crowd of 1,000 or more usually overflows into the
yard. The Pisgah Forest Baptist Church has a singing the
second Sunday night of each month and here again, the
crowd taxes the capacity of the church. On the third Sun
day afternoon of each month, the Mt. Moriah-Calvert Bap
tist Church near Rosman is host to a large group of singers
