Square Dancers
Defend Title ....
Through their appearances at various func
tions this month, the Ecusta square dance team
and string band are limbering up for the big
Mountain Folk Festival which will be held in
Asheville August 5, 6 and 7 at the City Audi
torium.
Last year the Ecusta team carried home the
huge Cecil A. Pless trophy given annually to the
team judged the best in the competition. The
string band was selected as the second best among
the impressive list of bands entered in the
festival. Since our square dance team won last
year, it will not be required to appear until the
championship session, Saturday night, August 7.
Members of the team this year are Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Rhodes, Mr. and Mrs. Conley McKinnish,
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nicholson, Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Stroupe, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Whitmire, Mr. and
Mrs. Eb Morrow, Mr. and Mrs. Burder Teague,
Joe Earl Jones and Violet Patterson, Speedy
Jones and Mrs. Blaine Emory. Speedy is caller
again this year.
The string band is composed of Carl Patterson,
guitar; Blaine Emory, violin; Lester Brown accor-
dian; Rupert Gordon, bass violin.

convention of the University Women of America
at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville.
Surprise Concert For
Mr. and Mrs. Straus ,
The Transylvania Music Camp orchestra, with
James Christian Pfohl conducting, presented a
surprise concert for Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Straus
at their home in Biltmore Forest, Thursday eve
ning, July 8. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Straus,
Harry, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Roger King of New
York came especially for the occasion which gave
recognition to the great interest their parents
have taken in the welfare and future of the Tran
sylvania Music Festival. Many friends of Mr. and
Mrs. Straus were also in attendance at the con
cert, thus surprising the honorees all the more.
Mr. Pfohl’s concert master was Leo Panasevich
and the guest conductor was Dr. Thor Johnson
of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Dr. John
son who is one of the outstanding young conduc
tors in America, is spending considerable time at
the Music Camp this summer.
BAND PLAYS FOR PARADE—
Although the weather was a little damp, the
Ecusta band led the parade through the main
streets of Brevard on Saturday night, July 10.
The parade celebrated the dedication of the
handsome, new American Legion building in
Brevard. After reaching the building, the band
played other numbers, including the National
Anthem.
