BY Lucille Heffner Hurrah! Hurrah! The good old North State! We tell you monthly of new books placed in the Library; however for July, when lowlanders think of "goin’ to the mountains” let us review our books on North Carolina. Published by the University of North Carolina Press and written by Muriel Earley Sheppard, CABINS IN THE LAUREL portrays intimate glimpses of life in the River Valley. Unusual stories related from the Civil War, the county fair, court week, mountain holidays—some true— some fantastic—but well worth reading. Latest of valuable books on the Tar Heel State is NORTH CAROLINA IN THE SHORT STORY. Printed at Chapel Hill, the book con tains fifteen stories written about North Caro lina by noted noveliists, such as O. Henry, Wilbur Daniel Steele, Thomas Wolfe, and Marjorie Kin- nan Rawlings. North Carolina has provided set ting and inspiration for some of the most signifi cant achievements in the American short story. This volume is truly a masterpiece. Some other North Carolina books found in the Library are: THE GREAT SMOKIES AND THE BLUE RIDGE, Roderick Peattie; OUR SOUTH ERN HIGHLANDERS, Horace Kephart; THE CAROLINA MOUNTAINS, Margaret W. Mor- ley; THE STORY OF HENDERSON COUNTY, Sadie S. Patton; TAR HEELS, Jonathan Daniels and ASHEVILLE, IN THE LAND OF THE SKY, Martha Norburn Mead. Perhaps North Carolina’s best known author is Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe. All of his works (pub lished in book form) are in the Library. ***** With Brevard in the limelight in the musical world you are no doubt interested in learning more about compositions, composers, and artists. The Library has many interesting and authorita tive books on music. A world of knowledge is stored within; some of the titles are: THE ROAD TO MUSIC, Nicolas Slonimsky; THE MUSIC LOVER’S HANDBOOK, Elie Seigmeister; MU SIC IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION, Paul Henry Lang; THE STANDARD CONCERT GUIDE and THE STANDARD OPERA GUIDE by George P. Upton and Felix Borowski; THE BI OGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF MUSI CIANS, Rupert Hughes; WHAT TO LISTEN FOR IN MUSIC, Aaron Copland and HYMNS IN THE LIVES OF MEN by Robert G. Mc- Cutchan. COOLING THOUGHT At the risk of being run out of town for digging such a picture out of the files, we thought this snow scene of last winter might bring you some imaginary relief from the high nineties temper atures we’ve experienced during most of this month. Remember back in the winter months when we were moaning about fuel oil shortages, anti-freeze, etc.? 15
