ACROSS THE TRACKS By Betty Finck Today, I noticed a "golden leaf”! It hardly seems possible that the summer is almost over and the cool, fresh breezes of autumn are approaching rapidly. We all welcome Hilda Kaltenbach who has joined our Technical department office staff. This month many have been enjoying the ocean breezes. Bob Peckham and his wife spent a glorious vacation at Myrtle Beach. Martha -Sellers went to St. Augustine and other interesting places in Florida and while there found many new speci mens for her collection. Also traveling to St. Augustine for their vacation were Pete Muffat and his wife. Pete obtained one of those wonder ful Florida suntans! Olan Hall and his family have moved into their newly erected home on Monroe Street. ORIGIN OF THE WEDDING CAKE The wedding cake had its origin in Roman times when the bride and groom together ate a cake made of salt, water, and flour, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. The cake has become more and more elaborate through the ages, cul minating in the high-tiered pastry of today. Signs of the Times—Quizzed in a newspaper contest on the subject, "What I Want In My Postwar House,” one entrant replied in a single, well-chosen word—"Me.” Mhs Gtiyma Lorraine Stov er, daughter of Mrs. Russell Batson of the Cafeteria staff, was married to jack Fenwicke Sunday afternoon August 8 at the Brevard Methodist Church. An informal recep tion was held at the home of the bride’s mother and the picture here was taken at the reception. Ethel Mae Clark is our latest bride-to-be. She is now wearing a lovely diamond and her lucky man is J. B. Holden. Congratulations to you, too. Jean Hall’s mother, who lives in New York, is here for a two weeks’ visit with Jean. Those enjoying vacations this month are; Myrtle Smith, Geraldine Redmond, Dot Conley, Mildred McClure, Frank and Verna Lee Smith. Elizabeth Gossett, Hassie and Marvin Garren, and Estelle and D. S. Orr. Sorry to lose Faye Gossett. We extend our deepest sympathy to Fred Cairnes upon the death of his father. JACQUELINE ELVA McCALL MARRIES CARL WHITAKER Miss Jacqueline Elva McCall of the Finishing Department was married July 10 to Carl Whit aker of Mills River. The wedding took place in Clayton, Ga., with Rev. J. C. Green officiating. Following a wedding trip through the Smokies, Mr. and Mrs. Whitaker are now living on the Hendersonville road. The groom is associated with Kalmia Dairies in Hendersonville. 15
