In First Place
Ecusta-Enka
Are
Nip & Tuck
All season long, the two top positions in the
WNC Baseball League have been occupied by
Enka and Ecusta and the only thing unfavorable
for us about that set-up is that Enka has been
on top and we have been in second place. Ecusta
will have an opportunity to make some changes
when the two pov/ers clash at Camp Sapphire
Saturday afternoon, August 28 at 3:30 p. m.
Mark that date on your calendar as it will be
one of the top attractions of the season.
It will be the third meeting of the clubs. Ecusta
won the first battle, 13-11, and Enka took the
second game by a tight 3-2 score. The game at
Camp Sapphire on August 28 will be the rubber
match and the biggest crowd of the season is ex
pected.
Rain and polio cut into the scheduled games
during the latter part of July and the first of
August, but in the three games played through
August 8, Ecusta was victorious in all of them.
Ecusta was not pushed in any of the three tilts,
beating Berkeley 12-4, Hazelwood 9-6, and Clear
water 12-6. Featuring the games was the con
tinued smooth pitching of Grover Suttles and the
hard hitting of his mates. Our men have had sharp
batting eyes all season and opposing hurlers have
felt the power of the Ecusta bats.
FOUR ECUSTANS ON WNC
LOOP ALL-STAR TEAM
When and if the WNC League All-Star game
is played, Ecusta will have four representatives
in the contest—Rusty Carland, David Sams, Jack
Alexander, and Grover Suttles. The game was
originally scheduled for August 11 at McCormick
Field in Asheville, but was postponed because of
the polio situation in Asheville until August 31.
Standings at the completion of the regular
schedule of the Transylvania Softball League
showed our Ecusta team firmly entrenched in
first place with a record of twelve wins and two
losses. The Shaughnessy playoff between the four
top clubs of the league is now in progress and
Ecusta will be favored to come through vic
toriously, although stiff competition will come
from teams like Kiwanis and American Legion.
Highlight of the month was the sterling pitch
ing performance turned in by Jim Griffin against
Kiwanis. In this crucial game, Jim came through
with a 4-1 victory and fanned 10 Kiwanis bats
men. By winning this battle, Ecusta took over first
place in the league and continued to hold it by
whipping Hobby and Sport in a later battle, 9-1,
and Brevard Hardware, 18-6. The lone defeat of
the month came at the hands of American Legion
by a 9-3 tally.
Four men from Ecusta were on the Brevard All-
Star team which participated in the district tour
nament at Canton the week of August 9. These
men were Ed Allen, Marshall Loftis, Jim Griffin
and Fritz Merrell. Burder Teague, another Ecus-
tan, was also on the squad, as a representative
of the American Legion team.
ECUSTA SOFTBALLERS
IN WNC TOURNAMENT
Our Ecusta softball team, fresh from their play
off triumph in the Transylvania Softball League, is
entered in the WNC Invitational Softball Tourna
ment which was scheduled to be played on the
local softball field August 23-28. The locals were
to play the Elks Club from Asheville Monday
night at 7:45 and the winner of that game will mix
with the winner of the Dave Steel - Blue Ridge
game Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
