SAPPHIRE SERIES TO CLIMAX INTERDEPARTMENTAL PLAY As a climax to the most successful and tightest Interdepartmental League baseball race in history, a playoff will be held at Camp Sapphire starting on Sunday afternoon, August 22, at 3:30 p. m. All four teams will participate and pairings will be drawn from the hat. Another game will follow on Sunday, August 29, and winners of the first two games will meet for the title on Sunday, September 5. The win ners will receive a beautiful Camp Sapphire series cup. To gain permanent possession of the trophy, a team will have to win the Sapphire playoff three times. More complete information on the Sapphire series can be obtained in the weekly SPORTS NEWS. ECUSTA COPS PLAYOFF TITLE IN LOCAL LOOP After finishing in first place in the regular season standings, the Ecusta softball artists went on to capture the playoff title by defeating Brevard College in the finals, 8-3. Of the four games they played in the tourna ment, our men took three of them, being defeated by the collegians, 7-4. Bouncing back from this setback, Ecusta whipped Kiwanis 4-1 before taking the college in the final game. Pete Dockens is one of our most versatile ath letes at Ecusta. During the winter, he plays a steady game for the Ecusta haskethallers and in the summertime plays for Champagne- departmental baseball team and the Ecusta WNC team. Since Charlie Clayton moved into third base, Pete has been roaming the out field, Roy Head has been hav ing one of his best years. Always a sure- fingered outfielder, Roy has been one of Ecusta’s hardest hitters in WNC League play. He has maintained a batting average of well over .300 all season and is being counted on heavily for the impor tant games remaining on Ecustds schedule. ACTION IN AUGUST Like Old Man River, the Ecusta baseballers kept rollin’ along this month, winning 3 games during the month. Top, Third Baseman Burgin of Clearwater who was quite a clown in the game August 8 at Camp Sapphire is shown laying down a bunt. Center, Footsie Case slides into home with one of the twelve runs our team scored in that game. Below, David Sams races to first base after sacrificing a runner to second in the Hazel wood game July 31. ECUSTANS TO SEE UNC-TENN.
