PLANT RESEARCH NEWS By Dona Wright Harold P. Vannah, Jr., was graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, September 18, 1948, with an A. B. degree. (Due to his service record he is a member of the class of 1946). Harold is the third member of the Vannah family to have been graduated from Bowdoin. Mr. Vannah was graduated in 1912, William in the class of 1941. The three of them are members of the Zeta Psi fraternity. Mrs. Vannah has returned home from Maine where she attended Harold’s graduation. During her return she visited friends and relatives in Massachusetts, New York and Washington. Mr. Vannah is really "fattening up” now that Mrs. Vannah is back to cook for him. (No re flection on his cooking, of course). By the way, he celebrated another birthday October 11th. Mrs. Nicholson reported a nice vacation which she spent in Narragansett, Rhode Island. She spent most of her time sight seeing and fishing. Believe me, she is "strictly on the ball” where there’s fish to catch. She caught a striped bass thirty one inches long. We miss Oscar Summey who has been trans ferred from our department to the landscape crew. Oscar boy, as we call him, will always be remembered by us as a nice "little man” and a good worker. P. T. Barnum had the reputation of always out witting anyone with whom he dealt. But a man from Vermont once turned the tables on him. The Vermonter wrote a letter to Barnum, saying he had a cherry-colored cat which he thought should be added to the Barnum Museum, the price being only $200. Barnum immediately sent a check for $200 for the cat. In return he received promptly a large, coal black cat, with a conspicious note attached to its neck: "I neglected to tell you that Vermont cherries are always black.” Neiv Fi Ye ar Service Club Officers This is the first formal picture of the newly- elected officers and directors of the Five-Year Service Club.
