Winchester Makes The 100 Club The first Ecusta employee to become a mem ber of the 100 bushel club of Transylvania Coun ty is Dewey S. Winchester of the Pulp Mill. This year he averaged 116.7 bushels of corn per acre and ranks high among the producers of the county. Dewey has been a part time farmer for many years. When he is not performing his duties as a Chlorinator Operator he is working on his farm at Cherryfield. He has 12 acres of farm land of which four acres are under cultivation. This year the corn yields were determined by a Steinlite Moisture Tester. This tester is used to determine the moisture content of corn and other grain, and was donated to the farmers of Tran sylvania County by Mr. Harry H. Straus. It is an electronic device and will provide invaluable information on the harvesting and marketing of grain. Previously, corn samples were sealed in air tight containers and sent to North Carolina State College for testing. This caused a delay of several days. Now the farmers can find out in a very few minutes when seed in the field is dry enough to process, net weight of each load from the field, and when the seed is dry enough to sell. Dewey’s corn showed a 25% moisture content which means that 81.3 pounds of ear corn is re quired to make a bushel of shelled corn at 56 pounds at 15.5% moisture which is the standard on which all yields are based for marketable corn. At 15.5% moisture, 68.3 pounds are required to make a bushel. Mr. Julian Glazener, County Agent, informs us that this is the first Steinlite moisture tester in a county agent’s office in North Carolina, and that it is the most valuable piece of equipment yet made available to the farmers of this county. It is expected to render useful service to the farmers. Future Farmers of America, 4-H Club members, and anyone else who wishes to use it. Anyone desiring to have their grain tested can do so by taking a one pint sample, consisting of (Continued on next page) 22
