Ecusta entries in the Second Annual WNC
Ping Pong tournament enjoyed a big day Sunday,
June 5th, at Camp Sapphire to win both the
Singles and Doubles division. Walter Straus,
Ecusta’s Fourth of July Ping Pong champion for
years, extended himself to land in the finals with
John Shaver of Asheville, whom he defeated 21-9,
21-4 and 21-3. The road wasn’t an easy one since
Walter had to overcome such opponents as Ed
Loftis, Buddy Oates and N. L. Ponder.
Sam Matthews and N. L. Ponder came through
with flying colors in the Doubles by defeating
the combination of Ed Garrett-Harvey Souther;
Jim Dillard-Dick Kaplan, and Buddy Oates-Walt
er Straus .Final scores of the championship match
were 21-18, 21-17, and 21-16. Defending cham
pions, Ed Loftis and Bob Anders were defeated
by Oates-Straus in the semi-finals.
