MARTEL MILLS NINE HERE JULY 4th
Shown above is the Martel Mills baseball team
of the Western North Carolina Industrial League,
that will come here to play our Ecusta baseball
team an exhibition game as part of the Annual
Fourth of July celebration exercises.
Since no WNC League games are scheduled
for July 4th, as in years past, this game will not
count as an official League game. The game will
be played on the Ecusta Baseball diamond, start
ing at 4:00 o’clock.
ECUSTA MAINTAINS FOURTH PLACE
Our Ecusta baseball team has won three out of
five games played since Saturday, May 21, for a
record of six wins and six losses through Saturday,
June 18 th.
The team won a double-header over the Clear
water nine on Saturday, May 28, at Camp Sap
phire, this being the big event in the celebration
of the opening of Camp Sapphire for the 1949
season. The team took a walloping from the
Berkeley nine on Saturday, June 4, losing by a
score of 3 to 13.
Harold Keener made his first appearance for
our team on Saturday, June 11, taking over the
mound duties and turned back the Hazelwood
team for a 14 to 4 victory, on our Ecusta field.
The team suffered a setback on Saturday,
June 18th, as they were beaten by the Beacon
nine by a score of 9 to 4, on the Beacon field.
Since the last publication of THE ECHO some
changes have taken place in the league standings.
The Enka Rayonites have tasted defeat twice,
while the Canton Pigeons won two games, their
first of the season. Enka was beaten by Hazelwood
and Canton, while Canton annexed their first
win by defeating Enka and their second one by
defeating Hazelwood.
Enka and Berkeley are tied for the league’s
leadership with ten wins and two losses each, in
cluding games through Saturday, June 11th. The
Beacon nine is next with nine wins and three
losses while our Ecusta nine is next with a six win
six loss record.
Martel and Hazelwood are tied with a four win
seven loss record, and the Clearwater and Canton
