B SHIFT REFINING By Jack Rhodes Several of the boys are taking advantage of the hot weather and taking vacations. Lloyd McGaha sojourned Florida way and from the very lovely post card he sent us, he must have had a nice time. J. C. McGaha is building an addition to his home and taking vacation at the same time. Paul Hooper just returned from his two weeks and reports "corn laid by”. Fulton Holliday and "Turnip” Thomas are making a two or three-day fishing trip on Big Creek over in the Smokies. Just back from our days off and most all the boys had very good luck fishing. Cecil Whit mire tells about the fish he catches but he just won’t say where he gets them. P. Hooper, P. Beddingfield, C. Gillespie and the McGaha boys can testify as to whether the sun really bears down or not. They come in on "grave yard” with good sunburns. Clarence Crowe is recovering nicely at Tran sylvania Hospital following an appendectomy. The Red Cross Blood Bank recently picked up 81 pints of blood in Brevard and from reports that is something of a record here in Western North Carolina. Donors from the Refining Room were: J. K. Mills, J. P. Beddingfield, L. C. Thomas, A1 Montville, Clifton Thomas, and Jack Rhodes. "Giz” Thomas has a new nickname if it sticks and therein lies a story. He crawled on the bed and the nurse tried 3 times before she got any blood. At that "Giz” only ran a half pint so she switched to the other arm and finished up, which only goes to prove the old saying, "You can’t get blood out of a turnip.” "Yes,” says "Giz,” "but you can sure get the turnip.” So long, Folks! Guice, William Neal, Rick Orr, John Kim- zey, Robert Rhodes, V. Shook, R. Nicholson, Ever ett Little, Walter Warren, R. Cunningham, E. Rector, O. L. McKelvin, B. Roberts, E. Rickman, T. Cooper, L. E. Bagwell, S. Ducker, W. Cagle, S. Robinson, J. Baldwin, Richard Rhodes, Coy Fisher, H. Nicholson, C. Peevy, G. Suttles, and F. Barton. Your reporter didn’t get any reports on the trips, but several of the fellows went to Florida, Virginia and Tennessee—and, of course, there was a lot of fishing done in the mountain streams. We hope to get a full report on these men for the next issue of The Echo. We were very glad to have the large attendance of ladies at the Machine Room-Champagne base ball game on June 8th. This was one of the best games of the year. The game was scheduled for seven innings, but at the end of seven the score was 4-4, so two extra innings had to be played. In the bottom of the 9th, Milt Pace’s homer put the game on ice for the Machine Room. The score —5 to 4. Well folks! Just a few more days until the 4th of July, and we’ll all meet again at Camp Sapphire for another big celebration. Yes! What a day for fun and laughter, so put on your old clothes, bring a lunch, and plan to have a big day at Sapphire. Laughter betokens freedom from worry. He who doesn’t worry lives long. We’ll see you at Camp Sapphire. MEDICAL DEPARTMENT NEWS A very splendid turnout from Ecusta employees resulted in a record take when the American Red Cross made their recent visit to Brevard for the purpose of collecting blood. This has been, and will continue to be, a very worthwhile community endeavor. Appreciation for this fine cooperation by Ecusta employees has been expressed by the Red Cross authorities. Periodic physical examinations for all employees are now being conducted. Existing facilities al low only a few of these examinations to be com pleted each day. These examinations are follow ing departmental and alphabetical trends, but any person desiring a physical examination, without delay, can make the necessary arrangements by calling the Medical Department.
