IT'S COOL AT SAPPHIRE Last Winter the "old timers” were saying that it was the most unusual season that they had ever seen (one light snow and flowers blooming in January), and they predicted an unusual Summer. Their predictions have certainly come true. The average annual rainfall for Transylvania County is 68 inches. Up to July 22 nd we had already had over 49 inches, with over five months yet to go in 1949. 12.26 inches of rain fell from July 1st to the 22nd, with the heaviest being on the 11th—4.45 inches. Since the rains have ceased, we have sweltered through some of the hottest days ever witnessed in this area. The only ones who have not been complaining about the heat are those who have come from warmer climates, and those who have been enjoying the cool shade and the refreshing water of the lake at Camp Sapphire. Every day, starting at 10:00 A.M., families start coming to the camp, and rush to the dressing rooms to change into bathing suits. The children head for the shallow v/ater, and the "old folks” rush to the diving boards or the nearest shade tree. The only ones who have to take the sun are the lifeguards, who patiently keep a watchful eye on the swimming area. At noon the families gather to enjoy their lunches in the shade of the picnic area, or drive home for a quick lunch and then back to the camp. Around the shores of the lake can be seen sportsmen lazily casting for bass, or asleep on the bank, with their poles stuck in the soil, fishing for bream. A little farther back from the shore can be seen the mothers reading or knitting, not worrying about their children because they know that they will be well taken care of in Coaching School or by the lifeguards. Camp Sapphire was purchased and developed for your enjoyment. You are certainly missing a chance to have fun and be cool if you are not taking advantage of it.
