Vera Bell, of the Finishing Department, was married to John Wilson, of Henderson ville, on July 3rd in Green ville, S. C. Vera is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Bell of Horse Shoe. The young couple will make their home in Hendersonville. TRAVEL When riding oevr the 6000-foot peaks in North Carolina’s Smokies and Blue Ridge, you will pass through forests of Canadian fir and balsam. Take a good look, and a good whiff of their clean smell, because you will have to go all the way to Canada before encountering them again. Awed tourists gaze at huge Fontana Dam in North Carolina would be even more astonished if their gaze could pierce the mass of concrete. Imbedded in the dam is a system of piping 500 miles long, laid in when the concrete was poured. The system of coils were connected with the lake water at the face of the dam, and for three years cool water circulated through it. The reason was simple—without the cooling system, it would have □ DITIES taken the concrete 50 years to cool, and control of temperature is important to prevent excessive cracking as the concrete cools. After the cooling, fresh concrete was pumped into the pipes which will stay in the structure as a part of it. Going along US 74 and arriving at Pembroke, N. C., don’t ask the obviously Indian population to what tribe they belong. There are 25,000 In dians in the area, but they do not know, nor can anyone determine, how they got there nor whence they came, though at various times they have been called Croatan, Cherokee and Sioux. In des peration, they finally petitioned for the official name of "Indians of Robeson County.” They have their own schools and churches, and generally are prosperous farmers. No remnants of their tribal culture or speech survive. 8
