DEATH TAKES ITS TOLL! ) When we read or hear about accidental deaths throughout the United States, we usually pay lit tle or no attention unless they are occuring in our immediate vicinity. From 1939 through 1948, a span of just ten short years, accidental deaths have totaled 972,000. Just think . . , nearly a million lives snuffed out due to lack of CARE on someones part. Of the 309,000 traffic fatalities during this ten year period, over 2,300 occurred right here in North Carolina during the past three years, and several of these were in Transylvania County. It is alarming to know that occupational deaths totaled 169,000 during the past ten years, and yet, 325,000 accidental deaths occurred in the homes during the same period. When we stop to realize that deaths resulting from traffic, industrial, and home accidents dur ing the past ten years would have wiped out the entire population of 100 towns the size of Bre vard, we cannot help but wonder about the ad vancement of civilization. We are no doubt mov ing forward in some things, but we’re really at a standstill when it comes to reducing our yearly death toll. Why do we say this?. . . Because there were 92,000 accidental deaths in 1939 and 98,000 in 1948. Surely, it behooves each of us to accept our part of the responsibility in pre venting personal injuries, and do out utmost to help make DEATH TAKE A HOLIDAY. A SMART GUY GETS HELP/ Even though our plant is well equipped with every type of conveyor and hoist imaginable, there are still times when we must revert to manu al labor in doing certain types of lifting. Every person should know and use the correct method of lifting, and above all, never try to lift beyond your strength. Remember that back strains and hernias can be averted by getting help when lifting heavy articles. DO NOT PASS UP AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO THEM ABOUT THEIR PERSONAL SAFETY, AND THE PART IT WILL PLAY IN THEIR CHANCE TO LIVE AND HAVE FUN THEIR CHANCE -TO GROW UP AND BECOME MEN AND WOMEN. n TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS HAVE TAKEN THEIR TOLL AWON6 SCHOOL CHILDREN EACH YEAR, A,ND WE SHOULD ALL DO OUR UTMOST TO AVERT SUCH A TRAG EDY IN ANY OF OUR RESPECTIVE COMmUH ITIES . V^E MUST REMEMBER THAT THEIR PROTECTION IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY. S
