BERKELEY WINS WNC INDUSTRIAL LEAGUE CROWN; ECUSTA FINISHES IN FOURTH PLACE The Berkeley Mills baseball team won the Western North Carolina Industrial Baseball League’s crown for the 1949 season with a record of 18 games won and only three games lost. The Enka Rayonites finished second with a record of 15 wins and five losses, Beacon came in third with 13 wins and six losses, and our Ecusta nine took fourth place honors with 11 wins and 10 losses. Since the last edition of THE ECHO our Ecusta team has played three games, winning two of them by decisive scores and lost one game by one run, that took ten innings to decide the issue. The team won its last game of the season over Canton by forfeit, as the Canton team failed to field a team, thus giving Ecusta the game by a score of 9 to 0. Saturday, July 30, our Ecusta team travelled to Hazelwood and lost a ten inning thriller by the score of 11 to 10. Pete Dockens, Charlie Clayton and Roy Head led the Ecusta team at bat in this game. Dockens had three hits for five times at bat, one hit being a home run. Clayton had two for four and Head had two for five, one of his hits being a two run homer. Saturday afternoon, August 13, and Sunday afternoon, August 14, our Ecusta team turned in two of its best performances of the year in de feating the Martel and Beacon teams respectively. Harold Keener turned in a one hit performance on the mound Saturday afternoon, August 13, as our Ecusta team defeated the Martel Mills team by a score of 7 to 0. Roy Head and "Rusty Carland led our team at bat in this game, each ^ collecting two hits for four times at bat. ♦ Sunday afternoon, August l4th, our Ecusta team came back and upset the highly favored Beacon team by defeating the Beaconites by the score of 5 to 1. Bill Byrd pitched his best game of the season as he limited the Beaconites to five scattered hits and one lone run, while his teammates garnered five runs on ten hits to gain the victory. Fritz Merrell and "Rusty” Carland led Ecusta at the plate with Merrell getting two hits for two times at bat, and Carland getting two hits for four times at bat.
