HELEN FULLBRIGHT LUCILLE BROWN The maintenance of quality is essential to continued success, which explains why thousands of tests are made every day in every phase of the manufacturing process. Every square foot of Ecusta paper is inspected. Beginning in the Pulp Mill, laboratory tests are constantly being made by departmental laboratories in every part of the process until the finished product is ready for shipment. The central Control Laboratory also checks all samples tested by the departmental laboratories. As the paper is being wound at the dry end of the paper machines, it is constantly checked by inspectors. Samples are taken from the sheets, placed in pneumatic tubes for the Physical Testing Laboratory, and within four minutes the results from all of the rigid tests are returned to the Ma chine Tenders. In the Inspection Department, the large rolls are completely rewound while undergoing intense inspection. As the rolls are being rewound, the paper is slit at the middle to form two rolls, the width as required for the slitters in the Finishing Department.
