THE EARLIEST SHIP MODEL IN THE BREMEN RATHAUS This ship dates back to 1539 and is one of the earliest ship models in Europe—as tradi tion has it. It represents an "Orlog” ship (an cient man of war) that, in times of the Hanse, as an escort vessel protected against the nui sance of piracy the Bremen merchantmen sail ing in convoys. With her 22 big and 12 small bronze guns, she was quite capable of ward ing off the rapacious attacks, so frequently in those days, on peaceful trading-vessels. On her main mast she bore a long red pennon reaching down to the waterline. From her stern flew the Bremen flag. The "Orlog” ship which was sent to Gene ral Lucius D. Clay from Germany. It can be seen on display in the Cafeteria.
