he two signs shown on these pages are located on the scalehouse just inside the mam gate, and represent one of the methods used by the Safety Department in trying to reach our personnel with reference to the preven tion of personal injuries. The safety messages on these signs are changed periodically, in an effort to bring out the great importance of self-preserva tion. It is very gratifying to know that less people KNOCKED ON W^OOD during the past twelve months than in recent years, and that more and more of our employees are joining the list of the WISE ONES WHO PRACTICE SAFETY. This fact was borne out during 1949, when our overall frequency rate of accidents showed a reduction of 47.7 percent over the previous year The actual figures show a total of 10 lost time accidents with 281 days ost durmg 1949, as compared with 23 lost time cases involving 499 days lost during 1948. This means that there was a great decrease in suffering and loss of wages among our personnel, and surely that is something that each and every individual employed here should be proud of. The very fact that serious accidents were reduced 56.5 percent during 1949, should incite each of us to do even more to help establish a better record for 1950.
