The land of the Urohobo’s is only about one- third the size of Texas, yet it has a population of 32,000,000. This crowded condition is the main reason that diseases spread so rapidly. Previously, the means of livelihood of this tribe was rubber, but, since the decline in the price of rubber, they no longer tap the rubber trees. They have turned to the gathering and export of palm kernels, which are used for palm oil. Taxes to the Chief are paid in palm kernels. A man’s position in the tribe is measured by the number and size of his wives. If the wives get too thin they are put into "fattening pens” where they do nothing except eat until they are large enough to suit the husband. All crops are harvest ed by the women, and the money that is received for the sale of the crop is turned over to the husband. Dr. Canning, the first white man to be made a Chief by the Urohobo tribe, says that he is really enjoying his visit in the United States, and television shows, and Betty appeared in over 450 straight performances in the stage play "Show Boat”. While with the Conover Agency, Betty’s picture appeared in many advertisements in maga zines and newspapers throughout the world. and that he has never seen anything as amazing as the manufacturer of cigarette paper. ELECTION SPEECH During his campaign for the Presidency, Ai Smith stopped off at Sing Sing prison to pay one of his regular visits to the prison. After visiting various parts of the prison, the warden called the convicts together telling them that they would hear Governor Smith. Never having spoken to convicts before Smith was not quite sure just how to begin his speech. Finally he said, "My fellow citizens.” Then he remembered that when one goes to prison he is no longer a citizen. So mak ing another attempt he said, "My fellow con victs.”. That did not sound right either so he finally said, "Well, anyhow. I’m glad to see so many of you here.” The grand essentials of happiness are: Some thing to do, something to love, and something to hope for.—Chalmers. Courtesy is like the air on the inside of a tire, There might not be much to it, but it eases many a jolt. 13
