All the things we build grow first from ideas. 'I hen they become plans that take on a definite shape as discussions and decisions elaborate on the original ideas. Between the planner and the builder stands the engineers and draftsmen who must translate ideas into completely-detailed working drawing and specifications. Construction and maintenance are an intricate and continuous proposition. In the Drafting Room the draftsmen plan in accurate detail the day- to-day building, changes and maintenance of our plant. Their work varies as much as the duties of the Engineering Department which they serve. An idea is presented them, they go out and take measurements, and by a system of symbols they draw up plans for the construction or main tenance crews. In drawing these plans they must translate the original ideas into detailed draw ings of girders, trusses, beams, replacement parts and water, steam and electrical installations. Also, they must show the size of each piece of material need ed in construction. Drawings usually show a top view, a side view 4
