The major project during the winter has been the work on the lake. Many months were spent on putting in a drain for the purpose of lowering the level of the lake to a point where the entire swimming area could be cleaned and resurfaced. This job was completed a few months ago and our lake, from the standpoint of swimming, is in the best condition in the history of the camp. All of our swimmers can enjoy the lake more than ever before. All of the docks have been repaired and in many places sections have been replaced. This will be good news to the sunbathers and the fishermen. The proponents of the art of fancy diving can enjoy the diving tower and the good diving boards. The junior swimmers’ area has also been re built with the idea in mind that more children than ever can take swimming instructions and learn to swim before the season is over. Two new picnic sheds have been completed, making a total of five, and are available for the use by employees and their families. The picnic area has been landscaped and beautified, and, as all of us know, is one of the most popular areas at the camp. It is anticipated that we will have another good year of fishing. Preseason forecast indicates that there are a large number of bream in the lake, as well as a good number of bass. Fishing rules for this summer are the same as in the past. The lake opens for fishing on May 29, and is allowed only with a permit issued by the Personnel De partment. These permits are issued to employees only, but may be used by a member of the em ployees’ family. Each permit is limited to a catch of three bass and five bream or crappie. All users of fishing permits must register and turn in the permit at the Camp Office before fishing. They must report their catch and check out at the Camp Office before leaving the area. The hours for fishing are from 10:00 A. M. to 7:30 P. M. Boats are to be used only by the fishermen. The athletic field has also been reworked and is in excellent condition. New drains have been placed in the lower part of the field, so that it will dry quickly and evenly even after a heavy rain. All of the home games in the Industrial Baseball League have been scheduled for the Camp Sap phire field. Handball facilities are a new addition to the gymnasium. A brand-new regulation handball court has been constructed and handball equip ment is available at the Camp Office. Handball, as many of the employees already know, is a wonderful sport and is sure to prove a popular item. It is recommended for reducing the waist line. It is planned that in a very few weeks, a new ventilating system will be in operation in the gymnasium. This will, of course, make the build ing more useful and more comfortable for every one. New archery equipment is on hand and archery instructions will be given every Thursday at 4:00 P. M. by O. K. Smathers, 1949 North Carolina State Champion. Other classes are being planned, and notices will be placed on the Camp Sapphire bulletin board at the Gate House as to dates and times of these classes. Juniors and adults may practice only during instruction periods. 18
