Portrayed above are activities of the opening game of the 1950 season of our Ecusta Inter departmental Baseball League. Shown at left is umpire Valary Carter, with Pete Wright of the Control team defeated the Generals by a score of 9 to 4. Holland Corn with three hits for five times at bat, and Wayne Nicholson with two for three, led the winners at the plate. Odel Shook was the winning pitcher for the Control nine. Marshall Loftis was the leading hitter on the Generals team, as he collected three hits for four times at bat. Although each team was credited with three errors, and the Control team collected 11 hits while the Generals garnered ten base blows, the game was of good calibre considering the fact that it was the first appearance of the sea son for many of the players. Wednesday afternoon. May 10th, in the second League game of the season the Machine Room team, defending champions, defeated the Cham pagne nine by a score of five to four. Footsie Case, winning pitcher, and Grady Wilkie locked horns in a pitchers’ duel, Case gave up six hits, good for four runs, while his teammates managed to make five runs off the five hits given up by Champagne’s Wilkie. This game had the appear ance of mid-season affairs, with both teams dis playing some fine baseball and the outcome un decided up to the final out in the seventh inning. Ed White and Wilson Gregory each hit a double for the winners. Howard Hutchins led the losers at the plate with two hits for three trips to the Control team at bat and Fritz Merrell catching for the Generals. The picture on the right shows Lee M. NOTES The governing body of the WNC League held its monthly meeting on Tuesday night. May I6th, at the American Enka Corporation’s em ployment office. Outside of routine business the League voted to hold its annual All-Star game on Friday night, June 23rd, at the McCormick Field in Asheville. The All-Star teams are composed of four of the outstanding players from each team, with the players from the first and second, seventh and eighth place teams making up one squad, and the men chosen from the third, fourth, fifth and sixth place teams making up the other team. The teams will be arranged according to the League’s standing through Saturday, June 10th. Team managers for the All-Star game will be the managers of the first and third place teams in the League standings on June 10th. In past years, Ecusta’s players in the All-Star game have played outstanding ball and we feel sure that those chosen this year will do their best to carry on the good work.
