James Hunter of the Finishing Department is shown by his new dairy barn which he built him self. FINISHING NEWS By Betty Ann Orr & Dorothy Banning Margaret Shook has just returned from Florida with a beautiful tan, and Lucy Cooper reports a wonderful time in Lenoir, while Ruth Reid is visiting in Knoxville. Others taking vacations are Verna Masters, Faye Lawing, Lillie Galloway, Ronalda Orr, Frank Collins and John Culver. Have you seen Lela Galloway’s new Chevrolet and Ted Gillespie’s new Ford? Rumors are that Lydia Reese is driving a new Chevrolet. Mr. and Mrs. John Culver are the proud par ents of a baby daughter born April 22 nd. We wish for Charles McGraw a speedy re covery from injuries received in an automobile accident. Our sympathy to Frances Hill, Albert Jones and Argyle Wells who have recently had deaths in their families. We are sorry to learn of the serious illness of Verna Smith’s and Roanell Bishop’s grandmothers and of Gladys Wirtz’s mother. Margaret Sternal says that the lovely new watch she is wearing is a Mother’s Day gift from her husband and son, Rickie. Pearl Gosnell reports that she and her family had a nice visit with her mother in Stecoah. Richard Cassada hasn’t given us a report on the catch from his fishing trip. We assume the big ones got away. We are missing Ed Matheson who has gone to Iowa to the Cellophane plant, but welcome Randal Lankford to Finishing. The largest bird known to man was the giant roc or elephant bird of Madagascar. CAFETERIA AND CANTEEN NEWS By Anne Kitchen Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Reid and Mr. and Mrs. John A. Wilde spent the week-end in Nashville and visited the Grand Ole Oprey. We have two proud papas in the cafeteria. Johnny Bradley was paid a visit by the stork and left a bouncing baby boy, and he left with Leroy Searcy a smiling baby girl. We were sorry to lose A. C. Price. He has gone away to school. Joe Corbett, Warrior McCall, Joe Duckworth, Leroy Searcy and Henry Whitmire have been enjoying vacations. AUTOBOUND AND MACHINE BOOKLET By Eula Landreth Our vacations are first—with Gladys Wilson and Irene Staton spending theirs in Tampa and St. Petersburg—and reported a swell time. Marie Smith is spending a week in Washington, D. C. Helen and Charles Orr also picked Florida for their vacation. L. C. Wilson worked at home on his house. Harold Misenheimer is also taking his vacation to work on their new home. Our deepest sympathy goes to Mae Whitmire and Sara Loftis. Sara’s brother and Mae’s sister were killed in an automobile accident. We have lost Mary Alice Jones since our last writing. Laura Pharr is absent due to an operation, but is improving fast and will soon be back to work. We welcome the girls from Finishing Depart ment to Autobound and Machine booklet. PLANT RESEARCH NEWS By Dona V. Wright Just a few words for The Echo this month to let the folks know that the "P. R. D.” is still in existance. Fred Findley is our "Bachelor” at this time— his wife and little daughter are enjoying the warm sunshine at Myrtle Beach for a few days. Lillie Nicholson is spending a week of her va cation now. She said that she was going to stay at home and do some work, but I have an idea that she will spend part of her time some place on a river bank, tempting the fish. With only four people in our department a long news column is impossible, so for this time, So Long! 29
