1. EXCAVATION FOR RAILROAD SPURS Three standard railroad spur lines will service the cellophane area. Be cause of unstable soil conditions the power shovel in the picture is excavating the soil to a depth of approximately 5 feet. The new fill which is being brought in from the Ecusta borrow pit will form the base for the new spurs that will connect with the Southern Railway lines at the northerly end of the site. 2. MOORETRENCH WELL POINT SYSTEM This large diameter pipe represents a portion of the area which will house the cellophane casting machines. A rigid, non-vibrating foundation is required for this critical operation. At close intervals, standard well points are sunk into the ground and are connected to the large suction pipe shown in the picture. The bottom section of each well point is equipped with a standard well screen. Two large engine driven centrifugal pumps are connected to the large pipe and suck the ground water through the well points thus de watering the entire area to permit excavation. This area will be excavated to the schist (about 15 feet) and the foundations anchored directly to the sub surface rock. 3. TEMPORARY ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING This pre-fabricated, galvanized steel building will house the du Pont administrative forces during the construction period. Upon completion of the plant, it can be readily dismantled and re-erected at any desirable location. The du Pont project engineers, payroll, medical and first aid, purchasing, employment, expediting and other administrative forces are located in this building.
