SPRING By Mary Sue Thorne We gaze in breathless wonder And our hearts begin to sing, As the earth is touched with glory By the magic hand of spring. Now that spring has come again to our glor ious community, we see nature at her best. Wherever we look we gaze at a masterpiece, such as the artists, from time immemorial, have tried in vain to reproduce on canvas. We see nature in a state of perfection and it is awe-inspiring because perfection in any form is something which we, as human beings, are not endowed with the capacity of attaining. We are touched by the rare beauty of a delicate ly tinted flower or the exquisite chameleon colors of a budding shrub; we move closer to absorb the fleeting fragrance of the trailing arbutus or to revel in the sweet mystery of the scented honey suckle, and we are vaguely conscious of a haunt ing nostalgia for something we cannot define. Spring is a glorious time and perhaps this feeling of nostalgia springs from an awareness of our own inadequacies and short-comings in the face of such beauty and perfection, and a yearning for improvement within ourselves. Since spring is the season of recreation and beginning again it is a wonderful time to take a personal inventory and to endeavor to throw off the cold, drab covering of our own hearts and personalities and let nature impart to us some of the glorious raiment of spring.
