UNCLE BILL The employees of the Maintenance Department and other friends of "Uncle Bill” Heaton gave him a surprise birthday party on July l4th. It was Uncle Bill’s seventieth birthday, making him the oldest Ecusta employee. Since he is planning a fishing trip to Florida soon, the first present was a home-made fishing rod and reel. The rod itself was a crooked locus limb, the line was a heavy rope, the hook was large enough to hook the Whale that swallowed Jonah and the reel was large enough for wheels on a small wagon. After Uncle Bill had examined this monstrosity, the other presents which were hidden in a box on the overhead hoist were lowered. These presents included: Action rod, Shakespeare reel, 300 feet of heavy line, eight bass plugs, corks, sinkers, life preservers, swivels, fishing knife, flashlight, fishing jacket and cap, thermos jug, minnow bucket, aluminum fishing box, landing net and money for renting a boat and for fish ing license. Nothing was forgotten. Just in case he didn’t catch any fish, there were sardines, pork and beans, Vienna sausage, and a can opener. Uncle Bill said that he didn’t need the food since he intends to eat fish during his sojourn. Then a twelve-pound cake was rolled out with seventy candles. The Cafeteria also sent him a large chocolate cake. Uncle Bill cut the cake, and everyone present enjoyed a piece of it with soft drinks. Uncle Bill was born in Greenville County, South Carolina on July 14th, 1880. He began work in the Maintenance Department on August 23, 1940. He is very popular among Ecusta em ployees, and is loved and respected by all who know him. He will certainly be missed when he takes his Florida vacation, but we are glad that he will have two weeks of good fishing with all the equipment he will need. From Shanty-town to Filter Plant From all parts of the mill Its the Ecusta gang that wishes you Happy Birthday, Uncle Bill! "Uncle Bill’ cuts his birthday cake. He is shown with his presents and part of the large group that attended his birthday party.
