JESSE GILLESPIE Jesse Gillespie, is Ecusta’s first reservist to be called into service. A long—time resident of Transylvania County, Jesse has been employed in Champagne since March 11, 1941, Mr. Harry H. Straus, President of Ecusta, pre sented a handsome gold wrist watch to Jesse as being the first employee to be called for active duty. On the back of the watch is inscribed: BEST WISHES FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT ECUSTA. GOD BLESS YOU. As a member of Division 6-17, Jesse left for active duty on Monday, August 21, with nine organized Naval Reserve Surface Battalion of other Western North Carolina members of the Asheville. These nine members reported to Charleston, South Carolina, where they will be assigned to regular Navy units. Jesse is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gillespie, and is married to the former Vivian Monteith. He entered the Navy on August 30, 1943, and served for almost two and one-half years, twenty months of which were spent on the PaciHc. He received an Honorable Discharge on January 21, 1946, with the rating of Fire Controlman 2nd class. While in service during World War II, he attended the Fire Control School for sixteen weeks. He was awarded the American Defense Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with one star and the Victory Medal. Jesse Gillespie is shown with the gold watch presented to him by Mr. Straus.
