■SiiPi BERKELEY WINS PENNANT Our Ecusta baseball team won two of its last three games of the 1950 season to finish with a record of ten wins and ten losses for an average of .500 percent. Two contests, the Martel-Berke- ley and the Ecusta-Sylva games were cancelled since they could not be made up before the closing date of the season and the outcome of each would have no effects on the league’s final standings. Ecusta played the postponed game of August 5 th with Berkeley nine on Wednesday, August l6th, and lost the game by a score of 9 to 2. On Saturday, August 19th, Ecusta traveled to Beacon and Grover Suttles starred on the mound and at the plate as he led our team to a 12 to 6 victory over the Blanketeers. Grover hit two doubles and drove in four runs and while on the mound he struck out eight men and allowed seven Ecusta at Ecusta ab r h o a Berkeley ab r h o a Eucsta ab r h Drake If 4 0 1 1 0 Massey 2b 5 0 1 3 6 Drake If 4 2 2 Merrell c 4 0 0 6 0 Selzer 3b 5 2 2 0 1 Miller rf 4 2 2 Sams ss 4 0 1 1 2 Goode cf 4 1 2 1 0 Sams ss 5 2 1 Garland lb 4 2 1 10 0 Pack If 4 0 0 3 0 Garland lb 6 0 1 Head cf 4 0 2 2 0 Sparks rf 1 3 1 3 0 Head cf 3 0 0 Volrath rf 4 0 0 2 0 Drake ss 3 1 1 1 2 Whitaker 2b 4 1 1 Charles 3b 3 0 0 1 1 Slider c 3 1 1 6 0 Merrell c 4 2 0 Whitaker 2b 2 0 0 2 1 Loftis lb 4 1 2 10 0 Poor 3b 4 3 1 Morris p 3 0 1 0 9 Hoots p 4 0 1 0 6 Suttles p 5 0 2 Robinson 2b 2 0 0 0 0 Corn cf 1 0 0 0 0 Wright If 1 0 0 a Miller 1 0 1 0 0 Morris rf 1 0 1 Totals 34 2 7 27 15 Totals 34 9 11 27 15 hits to gain the victory. On Saturday, August 26th, Ecusta traveled to Martel and Clint Morris starred on the mound for our team as he limited the second place Martel team to four hits and four runs as his teammates banged out ten hits for six runs to gain the victory. David Sams with three hits for five times at bat and Clint Morris with two for four led our team at the plate. Although our team failed to win the pennant, our players are to be commended for their fine spirit and sportsmanship. We feel sure that with a few breaks our team would have been in the thick of the battle for the pennant, especially after the fine showing they made in the Semi Pro Tournament at Berkeley, in which our team finished in third place among the 16 teams entered.
