SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NURSES TRAINING Ecusta is sponsoring a scholarship program to provide some financial assistance each year for selected Transylvania County girls who have completed high school work and who are quali fied for, and desirous of, taking advanced educa tion with a view to entering the nursing profes sion. The first two scholarship awards will be made just as soon as selections can be made for the school year 1950-51, and thereafter two ad ditional scholarship awards will be made each summer so long as the program remains in effect. Mr. Harry H. Straus hopes this scholarship program will provide an incentive and needed help for girls of high character and ability who have a genuine desire to prepare themselves for this honorable and highly essential profession. We believe that the community as a whole, in cluding Ecusta employees, will benefit from this program. One benefit should be that more well- qualified and well-trained nurses will become available in the community as time goes on. The scholarships will be granted, however, without any condition requiring or expecting that the recipients of these scholarships will necessarily return to this area to practice their profession. The detailed terms of the scholarship program are as follows; Ecusta will provide a scholarship of $300 per school year to be paid to each girl selected for such award and to be paid for each year of a three-year nurse’s training course in an approved accredited school. Any girl residing in (or having a substantial connection with) Transylvania County who has successfully completed her high school education (whether in Transylvania County or elsewhere) is eligible for selection for one of these scholar ship awards. Any girl who wishes to be considered for one of these scholarships should write a letter of ap plication giving detailed information about her self, including her age, residence, details as to her scholastic record, working experience, if any, and other interests and activities. The letter of application should also explain such plans or de sires as she has with respect to entering the nursing profession. Letters of recommendation may be submitted with the letters of application. All applications and accompanying material should be addressed to Ecusta Paper Corporation and should be sent in before March 1 of any year (except in the case of applications for scholar ships for the school year 1950-51). All applications filed with Ecusta will be turned over to, and the selection of the two girls to be awarded scholarships each year will be made by, a committee of citizens of Transylvania County consisting of the Superintendent of the Tran sylvania County Schools, the County Health Nurse, the President of the Transylvania County Medical Association, and the President of the Transylvania Ministerial Association. The committee in making its selections shall consider the following factors as to all applicants: (a) General scholastic high school record. (b) Special interest in and aptitude for nurs ing as indicated by scholastic record in subjects such as science, physiology, hygiene, and the like. (c) Personality and character traits which evi dence seriousness of purpose, likelihood of comple tion of the three-year nursing course, and devotion to the ideals associated with the nursing profession. (d) General physical fitness for the demands imposed by the nursing profession. The Committee will select as scholarship re cipients from among the applicants those girls who in their judgment possess the most desirable com bination of qualifications based on the above fac tors. The Committee will have the power, if in its judgment circumstances warrant, to consider girls who have not made formal application. The Com mittee will also make such inquiries and investiga tions as to the applicants as it sees fit. The Com mittee in addition to selecting two scholarship re cipients each year will also select a first alternate and a second alternate. In the event that either or both of the persons selected for the scholarships shall be unable to accept such scholarships, the scholarship awards shall then be offered in the order of precedence to the alternates selected by the Committee.
