During Scout Week, Boy Scouts of America celebrated the 41st anniversary of the organiza tion with a full week of activities. The local Scouts celebrated the 35 th anniversary of Scouting in the Transylvania District. On Saturday, February 10, Scouts were duly sworn in and assumed the duties of the city of ficials in Brevard. They elected their Mayor, At torney, City Clerk, Street Superintendent, Police men and Firemen. In the absence of Mayor S. E. Varner, Mr. W. M. Melton gave the oath of of fice to Scout Mayor, Harry Sellers, Jr., who in turn gave the oath to the other officials. Much to the amazement of many citizens, the Scout Policemen did a very good job of passing out tickets for parking violations. We know that the two members of the Arrangements Commit tee had to pay a $1.00 fine, but they were not the only ones heading for the City Hall with a little slip of paper. The firemen did an outstanding job on their practice run with the fire truck. They connected to the hydrant, ran out 200 feet of hose, and had water at nozzle in less than three minutes. The hose was folded neatly and placed back on the truck. Fire Chief Dan Merrill, complimented them on an excellent job. Some of the boys braved the snow during the week and spent a few nights in their tents on the Courthouse lawn. The sleeping must have been pretty rough, but the food certainly smelled good. Right; Fred Taylor was arrested for monopoliz ing the restaurant business and had to appear be fore the Board. He was given 50 days, sentence suspended if he buy ice cream for the group. BELOW: The Board of Aldermen, City At torney and Chief of Police look on as Acting Mayor Harry Seller, Jr., swears in this Acting Board of Aldermen, including, left to right- Paul Sitton, Rickey Best, Leon Howard, Mack Holmes and Edwin Garrett.
