'M. 1951 BASEBALL SEASON OPENS The Western North Carolina Industrial Base ball League officially opened its 1951 season on Wednesday afternoon, April 18th. The league will play a forty game schedule for the first time during its 17 years of existence. Mr. Robert Deyton made the initial pitch to open our Ecusta team’s first game of the season against the Clearwater nine, a new entrant to the league for the ’51 season. Although our Ecusta nine was defeated by a score of 27 to 4 in the opening game, we feel sure our team has very good potentialities, and is a better team than the score would indicate. The second game of the season was played Sat urday afternoon, April 21st, on the Camp Harry H. Straus Field. A much strengthened Beacon Club, over the 1950 representation, furnished the opposition and defeated our Ecusta nine by a score of 8 to 1. Much improvement was noted in our team in comparison to the opening game and with a little seasoning, Ecusta should win its share of the games to be played. Scores of other league games were as follows: April 18th, Enka 8, Sylva 1; April 19, Beacon 7, Berkeley 6; April 21st, Enka 10, Clearwater 3; Berkeley 7, Sylva 2. A complete schedule of the WNC Industrial Baseball League is printed on Page 20. Shown at left: Mr. Robert G. Deyton, Treasurer of the Ecusta Paper Corporation, making the ini tial pitch to open Ecusta’s 1951 Baseball season. 18
