DR. CARL R. SCHENCK Dr. Carl A. Schenck sees the Memorial Plaque, for the first time, which was erected in his honor by Alumni of the Biltmore Forest School in 1950. Dr. Carl A. Schenck, 83, of Lindenfels, Germany, returned to the Pink Beds on June 8th for his first visit since 1909. Dr. Schenck started the first forestry school in the United States. The school, known from the first as Biltmore Forest School, was established in 1898. The students were in structed in theory and practice in classroom and field. The school was in session throughout the year, and covered every phase of forestry. The win ter classes were held on the Biltmore estate, in the spring they moved to the lower Davidson River, just above Ecusta, and in the summer they moved on to the Pink Beds. In June of last year, thirty-seven graduates of the old school gathered in the Pink Beds for their first reunion. At that time they erected a memorial plaque to Dr. Schenck and the Biltmore Forest School. J. Harold Peterson of Coronado, California, in his presentation speech gave this memorial plaque the PLYMOUTH ROCK OF FORESTRY. After visiting in New York, Delaware, Wash ington, D. C., Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Vermont, Dr. Schenck flew to California on June 24th. There a 40 acre grove of redwood trees will be dedicated to him, and will be known as "C. A. Schenck Grove.” Dr. Schenck told us that he could not believe his eyes when he saw the great Ecusta plant, and that he was so surprised when he saw how well it blended in with the natural beauty of the French Broad Valley that he had known some 42 years ago. 9
