MRS. HARRY H. STRAUS It was with deep regret that we learned of the death of Mrs. Harry H. Straus on Saturday Aug ust 11th. All of us who had the privilege of knowing Mrs. Straus have indeed lost a friend. Her charm ing personality was felt everywhere, and, just as Mr. Straus, it was her greatest desire and pleasure to help others. Ever since she came to Western North Carolina, she has been active in civic, social, philanthropic and educational activities. No mat ter how small or great the task, she performed it willingly and graciously. She will be greatly missed by organizations in this area to which she con tributed both materially and financially. The former Martha Washington Landeck of New York, she was married to Mr. Straus in New York City, December 31, 1905. On May 23, 1940, she was elected a Director of Champagne Paper Corporation and continued as a Director of that corporation until it was merged into Ecusta in December, 1947. Mrs. Straus was a Director of Endless Belt Corporation from Jan uary 13, 1947, to August 12, 1950. On April 6, 1948, she was elected a Director of Ecusta and continued as a Director until May, 1950. Mrs. Straus christened a Liberty ship, the S. S. Albert Smiley, during ceremonies in Brunswick, Georgia in 1944. Surviving Mrs. Straus are Harry H. Straus, Jr., a daughter, Mrs. Louise Straus King; two brothers, Max Landeck of Rockville Center, N. Y., and Walter Landeck of New York City; two sisters, Mrs. Max Bauer of New York and Mrs. Bertha Bauer of Baltimore, Maryland; three grandchildren, Thomas and Kathy King and Harry H. Straus III, and several nieces and nephews.
