"D" SHIFT COATING
By Nathan Reed
Well, here goes with the
chatter for this month. It
seems as though old man
winter finally caught up with
us. It sure came in with a
bang and spoiled a few well
made plans for "D” shift on
their long weekend. Then to
top it off the full day of cold rain on Tuesday
really messed things up. I imagine residents along
the French Broad river left as we did in Clinton
last spring when the old Mississippi started ris
ing. Well at least the rain should have helped
alleviate the water shortage over Asheville way.
Well since last month we have lost a member
of our crew, and he has been replaced by Oscar
Layman, formerly of Enka. Welcome to our
shift Oscar.
Deaver Cairnes has been officially notified
that he is a 1-A specimen and candidate for en
trance into the armed forces. We all hope the
call isn’t soon.
Well, as there has been some changes made
in relief shift work recently, we have missed
Harold and his everready laugh, since Harold has
been working in the bathhouse area. Coy Corn
is to be complimented on how well he has been
working as No. 1 operator taking Harold’s place.
I guess after the first graveyard, Deaver found
out there really is a thing or two in coating hard
er than his head.
Well I guess Ed was rather disappointed when
he was unable to take his trip to Florida due to
a last minute illness of his son. Better luck next
time. He did take an alternate trip on Sunday,
visiting Charlotte, N. C. and Spartanburg, S. C.
I guess he still chalked up a few miles on that
new Ford he has been sporting recently. Sure
wish I could step up to a newer one.
Joe Whitmire reports "no news” other than
the fact he did some first class loafing during his
time off. As for myself, I’ve been doing a little
carpentry. I sure found out it takes many a nail
to put up celotex and sheetrock.
Winfred Ashe - reports a pleasant trip back to
the old home town of Sylva. I guess all the news
is yet to be made, so till next month—So Long.

MASTER OF MAGIC APPEARS
AT ECUSTA
Entertaining and amazing displays of magic
were featured in the Cafeteria on November 17,
when C. Thomas Magrum appeared before a ca
pacity crowd. The master of magic provided a
full evening’s entertainment for Ecusta employees
and their families with his continuous display
of sleight-of-hand, scientific paper folding, mys
terious illusions, and amusing situations.
Magrum, a nationally known professional ma
gician, appeared at Ecusta under the sponsorship
of the Recreation Department.
NEW IDEAS
Vertical Windotv Blind—The Verti-blind win
dow covering offers flexible light control, unob
structed vision when open, and complete privacy
when closed. Not only can the louvers be turned
to reflect daylight at an angle in a 180° arc, they
also can be closed parallel to the window glass and
rolled up to any height like a window shade.
Convenient Binoculars — Binoculars have ear
pieces and thus can be worn like sun glasses.
Called "Sport-Oculars,” the glasses are light
weight, dust-proof, and equipped with 25mm pre
cision ground and polished lenses of 3 power mag
nification.
Lighter Stays Lit—This little cigarette lighter
has the advantage of staying lighted even in a
high wind. The fuel tank pulls out so that you
can refill it more easily. The flints can be inserted
easily into their compartment which pops out.
