DR. FRED OLSEN APPOINTED VICE PRESIDENT OF OLIN INDUSTRIES, INC. U'’-A tm Dr. Fred Olsen has been appointed vice presi dent for Research and Development of Olin In dustries, Inc., it was announced on February 12th, by John M. Olin, president. Dr. Olsen, who is a nationally recognized authority in the chemicals and explosives industries, is also an Olin director and has been the director of research and develop ment. He has been with the Olin organization since 1929 and is widely known for his work in the development of stable nitrocellulose and in "ball” powder, which is produced by a revolutionary "under water” process, and for his activities in connection with cellulose and high explosives. Dr. Olsen was intimately associated with Olin’s entrance into cellophane and its acquisition of Frost Lumber Industries, Inc., with its timber, gas and oil reserves. He was elected a director of Ecusta on April 5 th, 1951. Born at Newcastle on Tyne, Dr. Olsen received his university education in Canada. During the first World War he came to the United States to do urgently needed technical work on explosives. Since that time he has served government and in dustry in many significant roles. Dr. Olsen is a member of the Industrial Re search Institute, American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Tech nical Association of the Pulp and Paper Institute, Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, Engineers Club of St. Louis, and Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Phi, honorary fraternities.
