STAR OF THE MONTH Foy Bryson of the Hillbillies took the "Star of the Month” honors for our Ecusta Bowling League by bowling both the high individual game and set scores on Friday night, February 8th. Foy led the Hillbillies to a 3 to 0 win over the Clear Paper team as he chalked up the high individual set score of 573 pins and the highest individual game score of 222 pins. This is Bryson’s first year of bowling in our Ecusta League. Time and again Foy has proven to be an asset to the Hillbillies team and his high- calibre bowling is one reason for the Hillbillies ranking in the first division. At this writing, he has an individual average of I6l pins per game for 44 games bowled. WNC BASEBALL SEASON TO OPEN APRIL 16 Officials of the Western North Carolina In dustrial Baseball League met on Monday night, February 11, and elected officers for the coming 1952 season. Mr. Bill Lewis, of the Asheville School for Boys was reelected to the office of League President. Mr. Luke Rindall of Berkeley Mills was elected Vice President, succeeding Jim mie Williams of Canton. Wilson Ayers of the American Enka Corporation was reelected as the league’s secretary. Another meeting was held on Monday night, March 3, to adopt the league’s baseball rules, to decide on the opening date and to consider re quest of new entries. Hazelwood and Canton expressed a desire to enter the league for the 52 season, but as they were unable to fulfill the requirements of the league due to unavoidable circumstances, they withdrew their request. Therefore the officials voted unanimously to operate a six team league composed of Beacon, Enka, Berkeley, Tryon, Clear water and Ecusta. The league will play a forty game schedule with the opening date set for Wednesday, April 16. However, at this writing, the schedule has not been completed and ap proved; therefore, Ecusta’s opponent for the open ing game is not known—nor is it known if the team will be at home or away for the first game. An announcement on Ecusta’s opening game will be made as soon as the 1952 schedule is adopted.. Candidates for our Ecusta team opened the 1952 season’s practice on Monday, March 17th, with high hopes of being in top form for the opening game. A tennis ball has been timed at 85 M.P.H. . . . But he would have been sec ond to an ostrich! The famous cue-man Charley Peterson figures he has walked over 22,000 miles around billiard tables. The final thread winding on a baseball is 150 yards long. It is so fine it takes a mile of it to weigh a pound. Ten-thousand horse hides are used to cover all the baseballs manufactured in one year by A. G. Spalding. 14
