When you hear of "conductors, switches and
lines,” your thoughts might turn to railroading.
But if you add the terms:—"motors, generators,
conduits, control boxes, bus bars, batteries” and
other similar ones, you think of an electrical op
eration. And where we have electrical operations
in the Paper Division of Ecusta, we have the
Paper Division Electrical Section of the General
Maintenance department.
This group, under the guidance of Paper Di
vision Electrical Supervisor, Luk? Harrison, han
dles a diversity of activities rarely found in an
electrical service and repair shop. Assignments
include installations of new equipment, remodel
ling of existing installations, replacement of worn
or obsolete items, as well as the repair of elec
trical equipment.
By far the greatest efforts, however, are ex
pended on "Preventive Maintenance”. This means,
as the term implies, preventing expensive break
downs from occuring, or "A stitch in time—”.
This service is carried out through a comprehen
sive series of planned inspections, some each shift
and some at longer intervals depending upon the
critical nature of the equipment. A defective cir
cuit breaker, for example, may be repaired in a
matter of minutes if found in time. If not found,
it could shut down machinery with the consequent
loss of production plus the cost of a new circuit
breaker.
Preventive maintenance goes one step further
with the object of prolonging the life of electrical
equipment. Electric motors are taken to the shop
for overhaul after two years of service. Similarly,
battery trucks and other portable equipment are
overhauled on an existing schedule. Proper lubri
cation is stressed and carried out on a schedule.
These schedules, plus equipment, parts, and per
sonnel records with other controls entail a con
siderable amount of paper work. This is pro
cessed by Paper Division Maintenance Clerk, E.
M. Collins.
The well equipped electric shop and shop
craftsmen is supervised by Paper Division Elec
trical Foreman, Wayne Conn. In addition to work
you would expect of skilled electricians, a number
of specialized activities are carried out, consuming
