OUR CAMP STRAUS LIFE GUARDS Few realize what an important job is being done at Camp Straus by a group of five young men. These five are, in a sense, specialized safety men—water safety men. Theirs is the task of keeping a careful watch over every person enter ing the lake—swimmers and non-swimmers alike. Should bathers need assistance, they are prepared to give immediate aid. Their record speaks for them—not a drowning or serious water mishap since the camp was started in 1945. Members of the life guard staff for the 1952 season at Camp Straus are: Top left: Alden Ryon. Medical school senior at Univ. of Cincinnati. Graduated from Citadel 1948. Navy swimming instructor during World War II. Top right: Gene Ryon III. Dental school senior at Univ. of Penn. Graduated from U.N.C. 1949. Navy veteran. Holds Red Cross instructors rating. Circle: Charles "Dusty” Erwin. Junior at Clem- son College. Member of Clemson ROTC pro gram. Holds Senior Life Saving Certificate. Above left: Pete Howard. Sophomore at Clem son. Member of Clemson baseball team. Also plays on Ecusta team. Member of Clemson ROTC. Is now taking Senior Life Saving course at Camp Straus. Plans to take Instructors course at Camp Carolina Aquatic School in August . Above right: Jack Edwards. Graduated Brevard High School 1952. Will enter Clemson as fresh man this fall. Will join ROTC program. Holds Senior Life Saving certificate. 9
