ECUSTA DROPS
TO FOURTH PLACE
Our Ecusta baseballers dropped to fourth place
in the W. N. C. League standings in the past five
weeks as they only won four of ten games played.
However the team has been playing a commend
able brand of baseball as the scores indicate, with
two of the last four contests lost being decided
by the margin of two runs each while in the other
two each were decided by one run.
After losing contests to Clearwater, Beacon and
Berkeley on June 24, 28 and July 1, respectively
our team bounced back in the win column by
winning a double header over the Tryon club on
July 4, before a record crowd of some 2,000.
Grover Frisbee pitched six hit ball to win the
opening game 8 to 2 and big Jim Kilpatrick
turned in a superb 2 hit pitching performance to
annex the night cap by the score of 5 to 0.
On Tuesday, July 8, Grover Frisbee and Bill
Trull of Enka staged a pitchers duel which Enka
won by the score of two runs, which the Rayon-
ites made in the opening inning of the game.
In the Clearwater encounter on Friday, July 11,
the Clearwater Indians capitalized on a 4 run big
seventh inning to defeat our team by the score of
4 to 3. On Tuesday, July 15, Ecusta dropped an
other close game to the Beacon Blanketeers by the
score of 5 to 4.
However Ecusta fans who were lucky enough
to be present, were treated to one of the best
played games of the season by our Ecusta team
on Saturday night, July 19, as our baseballers up
set the league leading Berkeley team by a score
of 2 to 0, at the Berkeley park. Our team jumped
on Duncan for three hits and two runs in the first
inning to lead the game all the way. After this it
was a pitcher’s duel between Frisbee and Duncan
with Frisbee turning in a five hit one run per
formance while his teammates rapped out nine
hits for two runs to gain the victory.
On Saturday, July 26, Ecusta continued to win,
by defeating Enka 2 to 1. Grover Frisbee gave
Enka one hit.
Our Ecusta team has seven important games
between August 2 and 23, when the 1952 season
comes to a close. Four of these contests will be
home games and we want to urge all Ecustans and
friends to come out and support the team which
will be striving to maintain a berth among the
